Brothers,
The following article appeared in the Akron Beacon Journal on Sunday, March 4th. It concerns Adam Poppenhouse, the grandson of Brother Dick Poppenhouse (GA359). Adam was badly injured in Iraq on December 3rd, and there are some fund raising efforts being made to help Adam, his wife Amanda, and their 6 month old daughter Rylee. Should you be interested in helping, information on those efforts can be found at the bottom of the article.
Students support wounded soldier
Cuyahoga Falls school he attended raises $3,301
By Jim Carney
Beacon Journal staff writer
The middle school soldier Adam Poppenhouse attended in Cuyahoga Falls has come to his aid.
A fundraiser at Roberts Middle School has collected more than $3,301 for the Adam P. Poppenhouse Benevolent Fund. Poppenhouse was wounded in Iraq in December.
The drive was led by the Roberts Builders Club, a Kiwanis-sponsored organization.
Everyone who gave $2 or more received Harry London Buckeyes.
Poppenhouse, a 2004 Cuyahoga Falls High School graduate, lost part of a leg as the result of a roadside bombing Dec. 3.
Before word arrived that the 21-year-old soldier had been injured, the school had planned to send him a Christmas package, said Stephen Anderson, a sixth-grade teacher at the school and adviser to the Builders Club.
When the club learned he was hurt, it sent the Christmas package to the soldier credited with saving Poppenhouse, Anderson said.
``After Christmas, we decided we had to do something'' for Poppenhouse, he said.
The 55-member club decided to hold the fundraiser.
Letters were sent home to parents of students at Roberts -- the school Spc. Poppenhouse's brother, Matt, currently attends -- asking them to donate.
``Please keep Adam and his family in your thoughts and prayers,'' read a flier.
Poppenhouse's right leg was amputated above the knee, and his left foot was seriously injured.
In late February at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center -- using a computerized prosthetic leg and his fused and braced foot, and with the aid of a walker and canes -- Poppenhouse walked using both legs for the first time since he was wounded. Before that, he had been walking using the prosthetic leg only.
``We appreciate everything they've done,'' said his wife, Amanda Poppenhouse. The Poppenhouses have a daughter, Rylee, who was born Aug. 28. ``It really means a lot to us that they are helping us out and thinking about us.''
Poppenhouse, son of Kim and Larry Poppenhouse of Cuyahoga Falls, is based at Fort Lewis, Wash., and was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division -- the Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
Donations to assist the Poppenhouse family can be made to the Adam P. Poppenhouse Benevolent fund at any FirstMerit Bank branch. (The phone number for the branch on State Road in Cuyahoga Falls is 330-922-5960)
A dinner to raise money for the family will be held at 5 p.m. March 18 at Northampton United Methodist Church, 852 W. Bath Road, Cuyahoga Falls.
